How to make a Chinese round paper lantern at home?
Paper lanterns are the favorite of many people, and they are also homework for many children to exercise their hands-on skills. At the same time, paper lanterns can also be used as DIY lampshades. Therefore, we still often come into contact with paper lanterns in our lives.
To make paper lanterns, we first need to determine what style we need to make and the general shape and function. Most paper lanterns are hollow, round, or barrel-shaped.
Do many people have a problem with how to make a Chinese round paper lantern at home? Or make Japanese paper lanterns at home?
We know why so many people reading this are so intrigued. The reason is that this is an elementary art object.
One of the advantages of this is that it can be folded down, thus reducing storage space. We even tried to make Chinese lanterns in Sri Lanka Because of that curiosity.
Although sad at the beginning of the article, there is something to be said.
Making round paper lanterns at home is not an easy task. There is no easy way to make Japanese paper lanterns or Chinese paper lanterns. This is not a type of DIY paper lantern.
This lantern technology was first invented in Japan. Later the Korean people became curious about how to make Japanese paper lanterns in Korea. Read this article to know more about How to decorate your wedding? using lanterns because of this shape patterns.
The technology then spread from Japan to Korea and later spread throughout China.
Although there are no major technical differences between making Japanese lanterns and the Chinese lantern, Its value depends on the raw material used in the production. With the change in the materials used, some improvement can be seen in Japanese paper lanterns' technology. Since this wire wrapping technology is a high-tech method of obtaining a certain shape, today, Japan is launching table lanterns and lampshades by creating various complex shapes.
In Japan, a Handmade paper made from the mulberry plant's fibers is used for this purpose. It is a costly handmade paper called washi paper. They make it using bamboo strips and paper according to the old traditional method. Rounded bamboo sticks were used to adjust the shape. Even rounded bamboo sticks are processed by hand, but now they are processed through specially developed machines. A medium-sized lantern designed in this way costs approximately $ 150 to $ 300. Therefore, the making of Japanese lanterns in the traditional way has become a costly process today.
Rather than talking about history, we will focus on making round paper lanterns produced by us .Here we thought of mentioning the methods we tried for this.
This is because if you do something, it's easier for us to manage the opportunities that come our way. The first thing we tried to do was try to gain an understanding of the mold technology here.
We did here to create a rough outline of a mold using a straightforward form. We need to do a feasibility study before starting any business.
Every lantern mold has 8 plates in a minimum. The first thing we did was cut out one plate and examine it to get a rough idea here.
After fixed all the 8 plates together.
So far, we have seen in the images, but we did not have a correct understanding of the actual technology around here.
Before studying anything, we need to create a prototype here and study it from the beginning and move on. This is what we call the Product development life cycle.
Here we realized that while retaining the mold's shape, the plates should all be joined together and not shaken.
Then we did cut the grooves in the next prototype, and the threads were made of wood. This is a completely handcrafted prototype Mold.
In here cut the two wheels on the top and bottom to assemble the Plates in the mold. Before cutting these, a block of cardboard was drawn by hand.
After cutting plate 8.
Once all the plates are assembled, and the mold is made.
Here the threads need to be cut to hold the wire in place. Threads cutting is the subtlety here. Without realizing it, we cut threads for the first time. This is finally what happened.
Now you can understand the importance of threads and it’s accuracy. Make a round paper lantern with wire is not an easy task compared with the bamboo strips.
Then we will see what happens after pasting the paper here.
Finally, after the paper has dried, it needs to be separated from the mold.
Now it will be clear to you that this is something that cannot be created very simply. For this, the mold should be designed with a technical approach.
If you want, you can buy a mold made for this. But the price of such a mold is very high. Not only that, but they are also hard to find. If you want, you can create a mold with technical calculations for this. If such calculations can be done, we are ready to provide a lot of technical data here as you request in a future article.
Here you have to pay special attention to all the threads that are cut in this mold. For example, in a 16-inch lantern mold, there are at least 22 threads cut per plate. The values of all these threads are different. All the 8 plates here are different from each other. Therefore 22 X 8 = 176 threads are per mold. We have to adjust every thread one by one manually in the mechanical drawing. Otherwise, the wire will slip on the threads when the mold rotates. Often, if no previous experience is available, several prototypes have to be created and tested. We manufactured all the lanterns shown hereafter considerable trials.
All of our lanterns are made of molds that conform to all of those technologies. Here we can see all the Lanterns and Designs.
Today most of these lanterns are made with paper wire. Producing this with bamboo strips is an expensive process. A paper wire is used for this purpose for several reasons.
- To make it easier to glue the adhesive paper well on the wire.
- The wire can be stored for a long time by minimizing the damage caused by air and water vapors.
- To prevent staining of the wire if the wire rusts due to water in the adhesives.
- To minimize slipping when wrapping the wire around the mold.
- Minimize the appearance of steel wire on the outside of the paper.
Even the paper used for this is special. As such, the technicalities here cannot be included in a single article. There are really no articles written on the internet about the technicalities here. Most of the articles available are largely misleading to the reader. We hope to give you a series of important articles on performing technical calculations for mechanical drawing here.
